About CROP
What is CROP?
A statewide, community-based grant program helping Mississippi congregations walk with people living with substance use disorders and mental illness.
Our vision
Love and support, where it is felt the most.
We want to cultivate a faith-based community where love and support can be felt the most, especially when caring is simply not enough.
CROP is a community-based grant program funded by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, Bureau of Behavioral Health Services, Division of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Services, and administered by the Mississippi Public Health Institute.
Our mission
To help faith communities foster recovery for individuals living with substance use disorders and mental illnesses through collaborations, best practices and education.
The CROP model
Five dimensions of congregational recovery.
A five-step best practice model, derived from the Tennessee Recovery Model, that shows how a congregation can walk with people toward recovery.
- 1
Provide spiritual and pastoral support.
- 2
View addiction as a treatable disease.
- 3
Embrace and support people in recovery, and walk with them.
- 4
Provide visible outreach in the community.
- 5
Share recovery information, refer people to treatment providers, and host or refer them to recovery support groups.
Where CROP is today
A growing network across Mississippi.
CROP has grown into a statewide network of partner churches. New congregations join each grant year alongside returning partners, and together they facilitate confidential referrals to treatment agencies for people experiencing substance use disorders and mental illness.
Meet our partner churchesHow it works
How a church becomes a CROP partner.

Church leaders and members receive training on the five-dimension model and on working with the stigma and shame that keep people from seeking help.
- 3
Join a cohort
New partner churches are welcomed each grant year. MSPHI supports partners with training, staff guidance and resources, and a mini-grant overview is available on request.
- 4
Serve and report
Partners talk openly about recovery, host workshops, make confidential referrals to behavioral health providers, and share monthly reports with MSPHI.
Requirements and dates can change from one grant year to the next. Contact us and we will walk you through what applies now, or see the resources page for materials.
